Alpha Theta’s Meeghan Dooley wins Miss Greek 2011!

On April 17, 2011, Sister Meeghan Dooley from Alpha Theta represented the chapter as Miss Alpha Delta Pi and took the crown and title at the 25th annual Miss Greek pageant hosted by Delta Tau Delta fraternity, benefitting the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. This year 15 out of 17 sororities on the University of Washington campus participated.

Delta Tau Delta Gamma Mu Chapter’s Miss Greek is the largest philanthropy organized by a fraternity chapter on the West Coast, having raised more than $1.3 million total over the past 25 years for cancer research.

At the root of this pageant is philanthropy –acts of altruistic generosity. Every contestant is asked to fundraise for Fred Hutch through alumnae support, corporate sponsorships, and other donations. After months of fundraising, the contestants come together for an evening of elegance and talent, commemorating their efforts and the cause they proudly support.

From the late night pancake feeds to the two hundred plus letters addressed to alumnae, friends and family, the fifteen contestants gave six months of their time, effort and dedication to such a worthy cause. Apart from the pageant and friendly competition, the contestants were able to visit Fred Hutch, themselves, and see the impact that they were making with their participation. Meeting cancer patients, survivors and the medical research team who work on finding a cure, the women’s passion for Miss Greek grew because they realized it was beyond a beauty pageant. It was fighting for a cure.

This year, the pageant contestants raised an impressive total of $73,000.

Alpha Theta’s very own Meeghan Dooley was able to personally raise $8000 for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

This past Sunday, the night of the 25th annual Miss Greek Pagaent held in Meany Hall on the University of Washington campus, more than 1200 UW Greeks, family and friends crowded the auditorium to watch the contestants compete in talent, a philanthropic address and the impromptu Q&A.

For talent, Meeghan Dooley showcased her world-class Irish-dancing. The first half of her act included a traditional three-hand routine with two friends from her studio. As the lights dimmed down, the audience thought the routine was over; however, Dooley strutted across the stage and Irish-danced to Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” glowing in black light. With a twist to her routine, stellar choreography and beaming smile, there is no doubt that Sister Dooley is talented.

During her philanthropic address, Sister Dooley looked stunning in a royal blue dress and delivered a flawless, heartfelt speech about what philanthropy truly means to her.

For the final round (impromptu Q&A session), Sister Dooley asked who she would be if there was a possibility to be someone else for the day. She replied with the President of the United States. Dooley felt the global impact she could make would be the most rewarding experience, and after such a momentous day, she would take the lessons she learned and apply it to her local community.

All the other contestants had great talent and speeches, too. However, it was Sister Meeghan Dooley who stole the spotlight with her poise, grace and amazing personality.

After being crowned Miss Greek 2011, Sister Dooley was rushed on stage by her Alpha Theta sisters with diamond-shaped glitter signs and flowers. So proud of her hard work and efforts, the Alpha Theta chapter sees that Sister Dooley is a wonderful representation of not only the chapter but also, the international organization as a whole.

Sister Meeghan Dooley’s reign as Miss Greek will mark the first time in 25 years that an Alpha Delta Pi won the title – an amazing achievement.

Congratulations, Meeghan!
We are all so proud of you.
