"I'm a Mouse, DUH."

I had to end Halloween festivities tonight with another classic "Mean Girls" quote.
Most common halloween go-to outfit for high school and college girls -- ahem, I forgot they wanted to be referred to as "women." Sorry about it, I just couldn't tell that they wanted to be respected because their choice of costume/behavior speak otherwise -- anything with animal ears. Be it a bunny, cat, lion, leopard, dog, zebra, giraffe and Karen't favorite... the mouse. Don't get me wrong, I was a cat my sophomore year when I honestly lacked all creativity to make an awesome costume for the All Hallow's Eve. However reflecting back on my college and high school years, it is quite sad to admit that most of my friends and I were just "giving in" to that slutty culture... you all know what I'm talking about -- it's when all men/frat stars/high school football players/etc. expect girls to dress in the most provocative outfit on Halloween and let all of their inhibitions fly out the window.

As Cady from "Mean Girls" said it best: "Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it."

Am I a supporter of this idea? Maybe my freshmen year when everyone wanted to look ... ahem HAWT.. at the frat parties. Soooo embarrassed.  At the present time being, I would have to say "hell no." I think the idea of being an animal, playboy-wanna-be or any sort of some male fantasy is just so demeaning.

My thoughts: I understand the concept of "sexy," I mean... I'm a girl so obviously, I get the idea that all women want to be desirable. However, I don't believe such ways can be achieved by over-sexualizing oneself. Being sexy is equatable to confidence, "owning the room" when you walk in and being comfortable in your own skin. It's not skin exposure, fire-engine red lipstick, fishnet stockings and bedazzled push-up bras. With the constant bombardment of popular culture through mainstream entertainment, i.e. MTV, Bravo, Cosmopolitan and other similar networks/outlets, women are under the wrong impression about what is deemed "sexy." It's not anyone's fault... it's the current trend.

(Ex:. Last spring's fashion trends included lace, mesh, belly shirts and tight bandage skirts. It's still currently the biggest must-wears for this season, and all of those fabrics and designs all suggest the body, curves and touch. It's appealing to your tactile sense - the soft and smooth characteristics. Soft, smooth, touch.. what do these words remind you of... I can name two: skin and sex.)

Oh and before you write me off as up-tight, prude and no-fun, let me give you a little disclaimer here... by no means, do I condemn anyone for their costume preferences... as mentioned earlier, I wore the cat ears, tinkerbell tutu and cop costume at least one point during my college career. This is just my own critique of the stereotypical outfits that women tend to choose for Halloween festivities.

So whatever floats your boat, man... if you want to be Sponge-bath Betty, Naughty School-girl Nancy or if you can rock that midriff bearing cop outfit, go for it -- more power to ya for struttin' your stuff... swag on.

Ladies... it's totally your decision on what clothes you wear tonight or lack thereof... but just remember that some of those pictures that are going on FB the next day may not be what your boss/boyfriend/parents/grandparents/parents-of-the-kids-you-babysit might want to see. Let's just keep that in mind.

Good night, friends. #cantwaitforstoriestomorrow #themorningafter #walkofshames #dayafterhalloweenparade

  1. I feel like there is a recent trend in being more funny than slutty. I was Dora my Sophomore year and a football this year, but maybe that's just because I'm old now :)

  2. I agree with you Erikizzle... but I think that with age, people will hopefully grow out of that "slutty" phase. However in the college scene, skanky gets you the gold for best costume.
